Thin Layer Chromatography

Fast separation of a broad range of substances in a single run

Thin layer chromatography is a simple, fast and highly versatile separation tool for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The fields of application cover virtually all classes of substances including pesticides, steroids, alkaloids, lipids, nucleotides, glycosides, carbohydrates, fatty acids, and many others.

 

TLC and HPTLC plates

Thin Layer Chromatography by Merck Millipore provides:

  • A cheap separation method without the need for sophisticated instruments
  • Simplified sample preparation because plates are disposable
  • Multiple samples (up to 72) can be run simultaneously under identical conditions
  • Easy 2 dimensional separation by using two distinct mobile phases in different directions

In general, classical thin layer chromatography is manually performed whereas instrumental high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) can be automated. Furthermore, TLC can be easily upscaled to preparative scale for PLC (preparative layer chromatography).
